WW #006: The wait is worth it!

Weekly WINGS

Wisdom and Inspiration Nurturing Growth and Success

Ah…. Spring!

For those of you who live with me up here in the northern hemisphere of the planet, we are finally seeing the May flowers brought to us after enduring many April showers… and nature’s display is absolutely gorgeous this year!

There is something so special about this time of renewal and the burst of color and fragrance that it brings… it always gets me thinking about time and seasons and how “the days are long, but the years are short” when it comes to parenting….

And for those of you who are teachers and other educators deep in the chaos of spring testing season, and trying to complete the curriculum without losing steam, I’m sure you can already taste the sweet freedom of summer vacation just around the corner. The countdown to the end of the school year is ON!

Spring is also a hopeful reminder that what is planted in the fall and lies dormant in the winter will eventually come up out of the darkness and bloom.

What are you planting?

The metaphors of seasonal change are a good reminder that we go through seasons of change in our lives, too.

Whether that’s in our parenting, or our teaching, or whatever new chapter of life we are moving into right now… things that do not change simply cannot grow and bloom.

This is true for our children and students, too.

Their bodies and brains are changing and developing new connections, skills, and emotional capacities at such a rapid pace that sometimes it’s easy to forget where they were even just a week ago… much less a year ago or a few years ago.

But the exciting news is that even if you can’t see the changes yet… all those seeds you are planting now are right are right there under the surface of the soil, just waiting to burst out into full bloom… exactly when they are ready.

As the parent of a young adult who has overcome so much in his life, I continue to see new changes every day, and it’s so exciting to me just to see every tiny step of progress towards growing independence, confidence, and creativity.

It may seem like you are still in a dark time of winter, but keep planting. Keep watering and tending the garden. Keep bringing the warm sunshine of connection and co-regulation. Don’t compare your garden or your child to anyone else’s.

It is hard work, but it is so worth the effort.

Just keep planting and gardening with tender loving care, and wait with hopeful anticipation for the blossoms and fruits that come from deeply nurtured roots!

P.S.  In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and Mothers’ Day Weekend… sending all the moms and teachers warm wishes and deep appreciation for the important work you do for our children every day.  I know that feelings around this time of year can be complicated for many of us, for a lot of reasons.  Just know that you are seen…. and that you are important every day of the year.
